Ranakpur - The Jain community has a history closely intertwined with that of the Hindus of Mewar. Many officials at the Mewar court were Jains. The ranas in turn patronized Jain temples and saints. Rana Kumbha gave a large tract of land to the Jains in the 15th century in a valley deep in the Aravallis where some of the most magnificent Jain temples in India are to be seen. Ranakpur is about 100 km (60 miles) from Udaipur, reached by road through Ghasar and Charbhuja, or from Mount Abu via the Deora-Chauhan stronghold of Sirohi.
The Jains tended to build their temples either on hilltops as at Mount Abu (Dilwara), or in deep secluded valleys as at Ranakpur. The central temple in this complex is called Chaumukha (four-faced). It is dedicated to the Jain tirthankara (revealer of truth, lit. "Ford maker") Adinath. It is the most complex and extensive of Jain temples in India, covering over 3,600 sq. meters (40,000 sq. feet). It has 29 halls containing 1,444 pillars, each one said to be different, and each covered with intricate, delicate carvings. The temple is built on a high plinth which is encircled by lofty boundary walls and graceful turrets. Seen from the outside and above, there are five spires, each covering a shrine below, the largest covering the central shrine housing the white marble image of Chaumukha. Surrounding the spires are cupolas, each forming the roof of a pillared hall. The temple has three entrances with double-storeyed portals, each leading through columned courts into the main halls — a seeming confusion of halls, pillars and courtyards radiating out from the central shrine with a hundred pillars. Some distance away is a polygonal sun temple, embellished with a running band of solar deities seated in racing chariots. Farther away are two more temples dedicated to the Jain deities, Neminathji and Paraswakathji, built in the 14th century.
