National Assembly
The King of Bhutan is guided by the decisions of the National Assembly which has 150 members consisting of elected representatives of the people (120), the nominees of the civil administration (20) and the representatives of the monastic order (10). The proceedings of the National Assembly can be viewed from the visitors’ gallery during the session. Royal Advisory Council A Royal Advisory Council of 8 members also advises the King end the Government on all important questions. The Council is also responsible for monitoring and implementation of the decisions taken by the National Assembly. Lhengyel Shungtsog The other important body is the Lhengyel Shungtshog. It consists of all the members of the Royal Advisory Council, the Council of Ministers, a representative of the Royal Bhutan Army plus the secretaries to the Government. This body meets gene-rally once a week under the Chairmanship of the King himself. Secretariat A large fortress like monastery called the DZONGS dominates the valleys and is used as Secretariat of the Government or main administrative centers. Meat dishes, mainly pork and beef, are ften hotly spiced with chillies. Favorable beverages include chang, the local beer and Arra, a spirit distilled from rice, maize, wheat or barley. Charges Whether joining the package sightseeing tour or Himalayan, a trekking, each member of the group (not less than 6 persons) is charged US$130 per head per day during the main tourist season - March-June and September- December. In January-February and July-August charges are US$ 90 per head per day. The daily rates, however include board, lodging, sightseeing, transportation, guide charges, entertainment and all local taxes with the exception of laundry and bar charges. Concessional Rates STUDENTS under 25 years of age carrying International Student Certificates or travelling with their parents or in groups by themselves are charged US$ 55 in all seasons whether for sightseeing tour or Himalayan trekking. DIPLOMATS are charged a concessional rate of US$ 90 per head per day in all seasons and it is not mandatory for them to form a group.
